For many years now the world of cosplay has held a special lure in my life. I have always admired those who enjoy doing cosplay. It is so much more than dress-up. When you put on these carefully created “costumes,” you also put on a persona, the character. You, in essence, become who you are dressed as. I had just never known anyone personally who did it. Nor did I feel it was truly accessible to me. I don’t have the body, money, or skills to get into it.”
Then in the last several years I was introduced to a group of people who love all things nerd, and this included cosplay. And they all had differing levels of skills with the art. I was thrown headfirst into it. And as many say the bug has bit me.
This past year has brought me to my first con and my first cosplay. I discovered that making a cosplay character is more about the creativity and creating the ‘essence’ of the character. I can take any character and make them my own, to fit my personal style, modesty, and body. And as a plus size person closet cosplays are amazing. I was able to take fashion and mold it into my characters. It didn’t matter that there were no pre-made ‘costumes’, I took normal everyday clothes and made them into my first characters: Blaze and Carmen.

Cosplay has also unlocked a creativity in me that I had locked away (for the most part) when I started nursing school. Watching all the cosplayers out and seeing my friends had photo images and poses springing to mind. This brought me to the floor to capture photos of a friend’s cosplay. These have further unlocked inspirations for drawing and even painting. And while these are a far cry from some of the crazy beautiful art out there, I have loved uncovering this hidden side of myself. While I may never done many cosplays, I love the chance to capture the beauty of others work, whether in photo, sketch, or canvas.
As 2022 begins, I have images and dreams of diving further in my relationship with Cosplay and have even bigger plans for my next cosplays!
So fellow secret cosplayers I encourage you to join me in this amazing realm of Nerdom.
